Two weeks ago, I didn't give a rat's ass about poor people or orphans. This was a very good book, and was the first and only book that made me cry in a long time. I am surprised by how much I liked this one. I stopped after reading 2 stars because I got tired of his Hallmark-kind of storytelling. However, there was something more to this book than other sad books I've read in my life. I expect the heroes to be unassuming to begin with and memorable by the time I shut the book. But, if you want a change of pace; if you want to imagine an entirely likeable Shane West as the appropriately cast Landon Carter falling fathoms deep in love; if you want to just savour a different facet of love. I won't spoil the ending here, but it leaves quite a lot to be desired. I decided to read this novel on a whim after watching the movie twice and being devastatingly impacted by Jamie's agony.
