Jake meets his former co-pilot in Gipsy Avenger, Nate Lambert Scott Eastwood , with whom he now has a strained relationship with. The actors can't make Pacific Rim any better. But what the movie does come up with has been built out in a halfhearted, clumsy manner that underlines the cynical nature of the exercise: a plot involving the rush to deploy jäger drones overseen by the shadowy Shao Corporation, which has been getting a little too close to the kaiju brains that its top secret research depends on. That would have been hard to explain anyway for Elba, whose character, Stacker Pentecost, sacrificed himself and his awesome name to save the world in the first film. However, when it sounds like the creature has settled directly over them, he begins to panic that Chau may have been right, and that it may be looking for him. This is also why the tone of the first film has been supplanted here in favor of a much sillier one, as well as a more cartoonish, ridiculously excessive slam-bang action blitz meant to appease the desired expectations of far eastern audiences. Tian Jing , is the prickly head of the Chinese company that looks like it could be behind the rogue Jaegers, perhaps as a false-flag operation for the remote-operated drones she is pushing for to replace the Jaegers entirely. She tells him that she had it authorized for Jake to co-pilot Gipsy Avenger at an upcoming meeting in Sydney. Characters run from the danger, even though one scene tries to mitigate the destruction by telling the audience all of the people are safely in underground bunkers. Massive amounts of large-scale destruction. The marketing department, well out of earshot, might add the visceral mechanics of the Transformers movies, and all the hi-tech hurly-burly of videogames.
