What they shouldn't have done was basing it on a real story, because clearly the director didn't want to be restrained, because a lot was different in the movie than what really happened, only a couple of things are historically correct, asides from that it's a must watch, I give this movie an 8 or 9 out of 10, so a small 9 out of ten. So he starts hanging around. Therefore, let me say this: the events this film seeks to depict were bad enough without any inventions.

Main plot involves a murder investigation. I think we galvanized a nation, which a good movie should do. Orion was confident that the would help qualify the film for consideration, and generate strong word-of-mouth support from audiences. I also like how they showed the views of the average ignorant Mississippian and how the cops either participated in the killing and terrorizing of Blacks in Mississippi or sat back and watched it happen. I'm ashamed that this was as recent as one generation ago.

Willem Defoe is great as the idealist copper. Agent Ward is serious, plays by the rules, but isn't afraid to challenge segregation in everyday settings. Rainey, who was the county sheriff at the time of the 1964 murders, alleged that the filmmakers of Mississippi Burning had portrayed him in an unfavorable light with the fictional character of Sheriff Ray Stuckey. Agents Ward and Anderson arrive in the small, rural town where the victims were last seen. Dialogue is crisp throughout, and the remaining ambient noises and soundtrack music are nicely mixed with the spoken word. Things are getting better, slowly. Really, a film to rediscover! And the blacks are better than good; their faces reveal them as martyrs, sanctified by centuries of suffering.

Hackman could not be better. Secretly, I did things to help in the voter-registration of Black folks; things you could get killed for, in those days. He steals every scene he is in. The other made his own. And Hackman is never more affecting that in this film.
