Instead of painting them as the enemy, the various participants develop friendship and empathy for one another. As they prepare for the big day, Akeelah find a spelling nemesis in Dylan Chiu Sean Michael , an Asian kid from across the tracks whose overbearing father wants to win more than his son. The relationship between the two spelling experts gets off to a rocky start, but once Akeelah accepts Dr. The language mention of at the beginning was quick and nothing my kid haven't over heard from other adults! But it is in her relationships with other kids that Akeelah is a stand-out in this formula film. Are you gonna sue me for sexual harassment? Kudos to the producers and the acting cast.
Set in an underprivileged neighborhood, the script includes mentions of problems with gangs and violent crimes, unwed mothers, and one moderate as well as a few mild profanities are used. A great movie for the whole family, I recommend this film for mature 9's and up. The movie shows how the traditional classroom setting is flawed, and seems to be at a standstill not allowing for growth or a true learning experience. Akeelah's family is struggling in many ways. My youngest, just turned 7, was engrossed the entire time. I think it was good to see that all children do not grow up with the benefits that they our children have, and that by working hard you can achieve positive outcomes. How does Akeelah's success in Akeelah and the Bee inspire others to feel part of a group, as her spelling becomes a community project? The same can be said for this crowd-pleaser. There, the suspense is palpable despite the certainty of the outcome, and the kind of affectionate, geeky-kid humour that characterised the superior Spellbound edges into the picture.
Plugged In has become a significant compass for our family. Just today I was reading Psalm 37 and thinking about how your ministry provides ways to 'dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. There were many teaching moments and of course we enjoyed rooting for Akeelah! Her own mother is against her. Yet, no matter how you pick it apart, Doug Atchison's drama is this spring's feel-good movie, with the good feelings coming from rational thoughts, for a change. This almost letter-perfect movie comes to the home video market with deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Keke Palmer0x2019s All My Girlz music video. We both enjoyed it immensely, and got completely caught up in the drama of the competition.
The story had me, and it kept working right up to the end. Akeelah knows how to spell and excel and this is her story. All four of us were sitting on the edge of our seats until the end. Cluster of honey bees were everywhere. There is some foul language and some verbal and physical bullying, but I felt my 9-year-old could handle it.
Akeelah finds her spelling in a particular sort of physical rhythm, tapping out letters on her thigh with her fingers or hearing the letters in her head as she jumps rope. Atchison has crafted a moving, even inspirational winner of a film. But for my 8yo and husband we loved this and will be watching it again. KeKe Palmer, Angela Bassett, and Laurence Fishburne- you are a complete unit. Tanya Anderson has issues after the death of her husband, and values Akeelah's homework above all else, including silly afterschool activities like spelling bees. There is only one person who absolutely must understand what she is doing, and why -- and he does. Her mother Angela Bassett is well-meaning, but simply too busy working to keep a roof over the family's head to pay much attention.
